The same Volume / Rate / Mix math bridges any metric that can be written as quantity × rate. Only the labels change. Here's how the drivers map across the most common analyses.

Revenue variance (Units × Price)
The classic case. When revenue moves between two periods, VRM tells you how much came from selling more units (volume), how much from price changes (rate), and how much from customers shifting toward premium or budget lines (mix). It's the standard bridge for quarterly business reviews and budget-vs-actual revenue walks.
Cost variance (Units × Unit cost)
On the cost side, the rate is unit cost. VRM separates a cost increase driven by producing more (volume) from one driven by input-cost inflation (rate) from one driven by a shift toward more expensive SKUs or suppliers (mix). This is invaluable for COGS bridges, procurement reviews, and manufacturing variance analysis.
Headcount & personnel cost (Headcount × Avg comp)
Workforce cost is quantity × rate too: headcount times average compensation. VRM shows how much of a change in personnel cost came from hiring or attrition (volume), from raises and market adjustments (rate), and from the mix shifting toward senior or specialized roles (mix). Perfect for workforce planning and org-cost reviews.
Subscriptions & MRR (Subscribers × ARPU)
For recurring revenue, volume is the subscriber count and rate is ARPU. VRM decomposes MRR or ARR movement into subscriber growth (volume), pricing and plan changes (rate), and a plan-mix shift toward higher- or lower-tier packages (mix), a cleaner lens than a single net-revenue-retention number.
